How to write for BetaKit

BetaKit publishes award-winning work. Here’s how to add your byline to the list.

BetaKit tells stories of Canadian startups and tech innovation across a wide variety of formats: trend pieces, breaking news, features, and investigative reports.

BetaKit is looking for stories that have not been published before, or a fresh take on the major stories of the day. To get a sense of the types of submissions we publish, take a look at the work of some of our regular freelancers. If you don’t see the kind of story you’re looking to submit to BetaKit, don’t let that deter you. It could be an opportunity; we might have just been waiting for you.

BetaKit prefers receiving well-developed pitches over full drafts. Here’s what we want to see in your pitch:

• Strong angles for stories about Canadian tech or the impact of tech on Canada.
• A clear articulation of why the story matters to BetaKit’s tech-savvy audience.
• The key elements of the story and how they will be presented to the reader.
• Demonstration of your knowledge of the topic and evidence of pre-reporting.
• A brief outline and estimated word count.
• Link to stories you’ve written in the past.

Make sure to provide contact information for follow-up. Be ready to elaborate on the thinking behind your pitch, including supporting evidence. If your story depends on access to a person, company or event, indicate whether you have obtained it or require our assistance.
